SPi Renews Partnership with the Council of Science Editors and National Institute of Health to Aid the African Journals Partnership Project
Washington, DC, April, 29, 2009, SPi, a global provider of editorial, content production, and business process outsourcing solutions (BPO) for scholarly publishers and other information providers, announced today the renewal of its commitment to the Council of Science Editors (CSE) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) to provide pro bono conversion services in support of the African Journals Partnership Project (AJPP).
The goal of AJPP is to improve the quality, impact and relevance of African health journals and to achieve this goal AJPP partners select African journals with leading U.S. and European journals. Administered by CSE, the project involves several partnerships and commitments by CSE member organizations including funding by three component bodies of NIH - the National Library of Medicine, the Fogarty International Center and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
SPi currently contributes to AJPP by providing pro bono XML conversion services for four peer-reviewed African medical journal titles - African Health Sciences, Ghana Medical Journal, Malawi Medical Journal and Mali Medical Journal to enable content delivery via PubMed Central. SPi works with the staff of each of the journals to create full-text XML and graphic images for the editorial content. Starting mid-2009, SPi would expand its support to include two additional journal titles - the Medical Journal of Zambia and the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences.
"SPi is privileged and honored to have the opportunity to contribute and make a difference in improving the quality, accessibility and relevance of medical information in the developing world", said Robert S. O'Dell, President of SPi's Publishing division. Speaking on the occasion, Diane Scott-Lichter, President of CSE noted, "We are pleased by the long standing commitment of SPi to the African Journals Partnership Project and the Council of Science Editors. Partners such as
SPi help us create an ecosystem that makes it possible for us to pursue our goals and objectives."
SPi has been providing conversion services to AJPP since 2005 and under the renewed partnership, SPi will continue to provide these services until 2010.
